A unique match safe from the Art Nouveau (ca1920) era! This sterling silver piece has the beautiful raised image of a mermaid running her fingers through her hair, while resting within a body of water. The repousse image is intricately detailed, depicting long flowing locks of hair topped with a crown, delicate facial features, individual serpent scales, and the swirling waves of a sea. The top of the match safe is hinged and opens to reveal a hollow, open compartment inside. The back of the match safe features an etched personalization which reads 'Diggens". The surface of the silver has a wonderful natural patina which adds to the richness and depth to the image. Under the lid on one side of the piece is the stamp "STERLING". A beautiful work of art, this match safe has exceptional craftsmanship and would make a special addition to any collection!
Measurements:The match safe measures approximately 2 3/8" tall, and 1 5/8" wide. The match safe has a depth of approximately 3/8".
Condition:The overall condition of the piece is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver and the lid opens easily and stays securely closed.
